QUINTA GRANDE
(PARISH OF CÂMARA DE LOBOS MUNICIPALITY)
32° 39' 44" N 17° 0' 42" W

The parish of Quinta Grande, created on July 24, 1848, is one of the five parishes that make up the municipality of Câmara de Lobos, has a population of 2156 inhabitants (2001), and is predominantly dedicated to agriculture.

Until reaching its current name of Quinta Grande, the land that constitutes it passed through different names, most of the time related to its owner. In 1501 it was known as Quinta do Cabo Girão, later it was called Quinta de Manuel de Noronha, followed by the names Quinta de D. Maria de Ataíde, Quinta de Luís de Noronha, Quinta de Fernão de Noronha, Quinta dos Padres , Quinta da Companhia, and is still known, in official documents, as Quinta da Vera Cruz and finally Quinta Grande, in an evident allusion to the grandeur, in terms of its size as a property, a name that, despite not knowing the moment from which arises, comes at least from the time when it belonged to the Jesuits.

Festivals and pilgrimages: Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (2nd Sunday in September), Santíssimo Sacramento (3rd Sunday in September), Senhor da Vera Cruz (2nd Sunday in May), Espírito Santo (moveable date, in June), Nossa Senhora de Fátima ( 13th May and 13th October), Popular marches and Arrangement of Fontenários (23rd June).

Places of tourist interest: Quinta do Pomar and Miradouro da Fajã dos Padres.
